Snail Softie {Tutorial and Free Pattern}

I am so excited to be joining Sew a Softie Day with a tutorial (and free pattern) for sewing your own snail!

Sew a Softie Day was started by Trixie of Coloured Buttons. Various tutorials for sewing softies will be posted July 1 through 16th. Sew a Softie Day is all about passing the love for sewing on to the next generation. I have been teaching Monkey to sew on her new machine so all these tutorials are perfect timing for us!

While this snail is not a beginner pattern, the story behind the snail coming about fits in with the theme behind Sew a Softie Day. Monkey and I spend an hour or two at our neighborhood park almost every evening. While she plays on the playground with all her friends, I sit at the picnic table and sew my various projects. The neighborhood kids have all, at some point, stopped by the table and inquired into what I was making. They love watching me sew and playing with all the finished toys.

A couple weeks ago, Monkey and her friends were playing with the butterflies I made and one of the little boys came up to me and sat down at the table. He proceeded to ask me to make him a snail. A BLUE snail. And so my next pattern was born. I haven’t yet given him his snail but I’m sure he will be delighted by the handmade gift!

Now, to make your own snail softie…

You will need:

  • pattern
  • large scraps of felt or fleece (I used fleece)
  • stuffing
  • safety eyes (optional)
  • hand sewing needle
  • thread
  • scissors
  • sewing machine
  • Freezer paper* (Optional – Check out this tutorial if you’ve never used freezer paper before)

Sew your snail softie:

  1. In addition to the pieces in the pattern, cut a 2″x 22″ rectangular strip in the same color as the shell and a 1.75″ x 25″ rectangular strip in the same color as the body of the snail.
  2. With right sides together, sew the snail slime pieces together but DO NOT leave a hole to flip. Clip the corners and cut a 2″ slit running down the middle of the top layer. 1 Snail tutorial and free pattern - sew a softie day - felt with love designs
  3. Flip the slime piece through the slit and top stitch around the edge of the slime piece. 2 Snail tutorial and free pattern - sew a softie day - felt with love designs
  4. With right sides together, sew the shell gusset (the 2″ x 22″ rectangular strip) to one side of the shell, starting and ending at the same point. Leave the tail of the gusset. 3 Snail tutorial and free pattern - sew a softie day - felt with love designs
  5. With the right side facing in, sew the other side of the shell to the gusset. Upon getting back to the beginning point, clip the gusset “tail” so the gusset meets end to end. 4 Snail tutorial and free pattern - sew a softie day - felt with love designs
  6. Clip the curves of the shell and flip right side through the hole. Ladder stitch the hole shut.
  7. Add the safety eyes to either side of the body pieces.
  8. Repeat steps 4-6 with the body piece. However, leave the bottom of the body open. (Do not sew the gusset all the way around to where it meets itself.) 5 Snail tutorial and free pattern - sew a softie day - felt with love designs
  9. Position the body piece over the slime piece (be sure to cover the 2″ slit in the slime) and ladder stitch the body piece to the slime piece. Make sure the body piece remains centered as you stitch, leaving a hole to stuff the body.
  10. Stuff the snail’s body and finish ladder stitching the body to the slime piece. 6 Snail tutorial and free pattern - sew a softie day - felt with love designs
  11. Position the snail’s shell on the back of the body piece and ladder stitch the shell to the body. (I stitched up one side and down the other to ensure it was stable.)
  12. Optional: Decorate the shell with an embroidered swirl.

I added an optional antennae to the pattern. I think the snail is cute with or without the antennae but check back in a couple days for a quick tutorial to add the antennae.

I would love to see your snails! If you sew up any snails using this pattern, please share them on our Facebook page or tag us on Instagram!

Be sure to check out the remainder of the Sew a Softie tutorials through July 16th.
