January’s Try Something New Every Month – Hand Binding

Rebecca (Hugs Are Fun) and Stephanie (Swoodson Says) are hosting another year of Try Something New Every Month (this time with monthly themes!) I planned on playing along last year but life got in the way so I am jumping on the bandwagon this year.

For the latest challenge of quilting, I attempted hand binding. I made these beautiful travel jewelry cases for a few Christmas presents and the finishing requires hand binding, which I had never done. I even made my own binding (which I have also never done!)

I made quite a few of these and just love how they turned out. The binding isn’t anywhere near perfect but I had fun learning a new skill.

I have read a lot of responses to hand binding quilts. It seems some people absolutely love it, while others despise it. I do a lot of hand sewing with all my felt projects so I didn’t mind but I also can’t say it was my favorite thing. I was a little surprised with how long it took to finish the binding on such a small project. I definitely don’t think I would enjoy hand binding an entire quilt.

After I finished the gifts, I ordered a binding foot* for my machine. I’m super excited to try it out too. Time to make myself one of these cases!

Be sure to head over and check out the other projects or  join in the fun yourself!
