Little Collector Backpack – One Thimble Issue 8 Giftables
Stephanie from Swoodson Says organized a week of posts revolving around gifts made from patterns in One Thimble Issue 8.
I chose to sew The Little Collector Backpack (also by Stephanie). I fell in love with this pattern after the first few glimpses of photos in the initial stages of this issue and already planned to sew one for my little monkey.
From Stephanie’s description:
“If you have kids, you probably have dirt and sand in your washer/dryer right now (or is it just me?). We spend a ton of time outdoors and my son lives to collect treasures like pinecones, sticks, rocks, and leaves. Unfortunately he also tends to bring home the surrounding mud, sand, and dirt that they were resting on, which ends up making a huge mess in my house.
Instead of sewing all his pockets shut, I decided to make him a fun little backpack that was kid-sized and kid-friendly. It has a velcro & drawstring closure, and an envelope-style pocket inside – both are easy for toddler sized hands to manipulate. The pocket and the bag bottom are both made of mesh, so all the dirt and sand can just fall through to the ground!”
There are few things Monkey and I enjoy more than going on adventures and collecting treasures. Stephanie’s idea for creating the bottom of the backpack from mesh is genius! I wish I had thought of it.
While the pattern contains excellent direction for creating your own straps, I took a bit of a short-cut and purchased some straps to use instead. I also used a snap for closing the top flap instead of velcro. (I avoid using velcro at all costs because velcro has a habit of collecting dog hair.)
Monkey picked out the fabric she wanted for her backpack and while I love her choices, now I really wish I had used PUL or laminated the fabric (I have really been wanting to try this Heat N Bond*.) When it came time to head to the beach and start collecting, I instantly regretted using so much white…although, I do love how it turned out!
Amy of Friends Stitched Together also sewed up a Little Collector Backpack and I love her idea of making one to hold gifts for each of her nieces and nephews!
You can find the pattern for the Little Collector Backpack (along with our Desert Fox Softie) as part of Issue 8 of One Thimble or you can purchase the individual pattern from the One Thimble website.
