The Little Mermaid Inspired Peg Dolls and Storage Pouch {Mystery Challenge}

The Little Mermaid Inspired Peg Dolls and Storage Pouch {Mystery Challenge}

The seaweed is always greener
In somebody else’s lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin’ for?

Under the sea
Under the sea
Darling it’s better
Down where it’s wetter
Take it from me

Today, we find ourselves in the depths of the ocean not because of a message in a bottle or a quest for sunken treasure but due to something far greater, a mystery challenge. Originally organized by Stephanie of Swoodson Says (you can read more about how it started in her post), Amy and Tasha of Friends Stitched Together organized this round of the Mystery Challenge for our small group of crafty/sewing bloggers. A few weeks ago, we all paired up with another blogger and assigned each other a theme. Everyone then had a few weeks to design and create a project fitting their theme. Head down to the end of this post to check out the other participants and their creations.

Under the Sea Mystery Challenge - Felt With Love Designs

Amy chose “Under the Sea” for our theme. Despite just finishing two sets of ocean finger puppets, we were up for the challenge, and decided to try something a bit different. The Monkey loves anything to do with the ocean but has especially taken a liking to The Little Mermaid lately. After receiving our challenge theme, Hubby and I enjoyed a good laugh as it fit so perfectly with the current state of our lives. After burn out from the Frozen soundtrack, we encouraged Monkey to listen to some other Disney tunes while we drive and, as a result, “Under the Sea” is now on repeat every time we get in the car.

Monkey has developed a love of imaginative play and spends hours a day playing with Little People, My Little Ponies, or Lego Mini-Figures. After seeing millions of creative examples on Pinterest, peg dolls have been on my to-do list for quite a long time. (My Pinterest board is evidence of this.) After a short pitch on why peg dolls are so cool, Hubby jumped at the idea (and the chance to buy some really expensive paint – which I happened to have a half off coupon for, go me!) He is now addicted to painting peg dolls and, as I write this post, has already started another set!

Enough talking, here’s what you really want to see…

Which doll is your favorite? It took a LOT of convincing (read: begging) for Hubby to finally paint Max so, you should really do me a favor and comment that Max is your absolute favorite! :)

Originally, we wanted to design and sew a playmat for the dolls but Hubby became so wrapped up in painting details and adding extra characters (Max the Sheepdog, Prince Eric, and human Ariel) that by the time he got around to sketching the playmat, I didn’t have enough time to create a pattern and sew it.

Enter plan B. While we could have still considered our challenge complete with the set of peg dolls, I really wanted to sew something  for the challenge. As you probably know by now from our quiet book posts, I am paranoid about losing pieces. So, our playmat idea morphed into a storage solution.

Full Pouch - Under the Sea Mystery Challenge - Felt With Love Designs

Hubby sketched a silhouette of Ariel swimming and I designed a pouch in which to store the beautifully painted dolls. If you would like to make your own pouch, I will be sharing the tutorial and pattern in a few days!

As hard as it was not to immediately give these dolls to Monkey to play with, we decided to tuck them away to save for a Christmas present. I fully intend to sew the playmat to accompany the dolls as well. Be sure to follow us so you don’t miss it!

How well do you think we met our “Under the Sea” challenge? Let us know what you think!
