Finger Puppets: Ocean Exploration Complete Set

Finger Puppets: Ocean Exploration Complete Set

I am finally finished with the complete set of ocean finger puppets! We already shared the free pattern and the tutorial with the manta ray and lobster earlier. As you saw from the sketch, the remainder of the finger puppets consist of a pelican, an eel, and a seahorse.

Ocean Finger Puppets - Felt With Love Designs

Together with our first set, we now have ten complete ocean finger puppets. We originally designed these for a guest post on Bugs and Fishes but these have been such a huge hit with everyone that I really want to add to the collection with a few more ocean critters. We are brainstorming what to add next.

In the meantime, to create your own you will need:

  • The Pattern
  • Felt (colors stated below, with each puppet)
  • thread to match felt
  • needle
  • scissors

Eel:

*Felt colors: bright green, bright orange, black, and white

Ocean Finger Puppets - Eel Full

  1. Cut all pieces from felt
  2. Cut a slit between the upper coil and middle coil, directly behind the head (along the line on the pattern) and position the eel body on the black background.
  3. Position the orange top fin behind the eel’s top coil and stitch down the top (through the orange fin) and the middle coil but stop where the eel overlaps itself.Ocean Finger Puppets - Eel 1
  4. Position the orange middle fin beneath the middle of the eel and stitch down (again, through the fin.)
  5. Position the tail fin beneath the tail and stitch down through the orange fin.Ocean Finger Puppets - Eel 2
  6. Position the white outer eye and stitch down using black thread, creating the black inner eye.
  7. Using black thread, create the remaining facial features.Ocean Finger Puppets - Eel 3
  8. Match up the black background front and back and stitch together using a blanket stitch, leaving bottom open (I also go back and stitch just the front edge of the opening with a blanket stitch to reinforce it but that is totally optional.)Ocean Finger Puppets - Eel Bottom

Seahorse:

*Felt colors: pink, orange, and white

Ocean Finger Puppets - Seahorse Full

  1. Cut all pieces from felt
  2. Position pocket onto the pink back piece then sew down top and left side (bottom will remain open and right side will be sewn when stitching the whole seahorse shut.) Set aside.Ocean Finger Puppets - Seahorse 1
  3. Position the orange fins behind the pink body piece (without fins) and sew on.
  4. Using pink thread, sew lines in fins, as shown in pattern.Ocean Finger Puppets - Seahorse 3
  5. Using black thread, stitch on mouth and jawline.
  6. Position the white outer eye and stitch down using black thread, creating the black inner eye.Ocean Finger Puppets - Seahorse 2
  7. Using light pink thread, stitch lines in the seahorse’s body, as shown on the pattern.
  8. Align the pink body back (with the pocket) with the front and stitch all the way around the outside of the body, using a blanket stitch.Ocean Finger Puppets - Seahorse Back

Pelican:

*Felt colors: bright green, bright orange, black, and white

Ocean Finger Puppets - Pelican Full

  1. Cut all pieces from felt
  2. Position the white pelican body on the blue background and stitch down around head.
  3. Position the orange feet and grey wing in place beneath the white body piece and continue stitching the rest of the way around the white body.
  4. Using white thread, sew down the edge of the grey wing
  5. Using orange thread, sew around the edges of the pelican’s feet.
  6. Position the front grey feather and stitch around the edge, using white thread.Ocean Finger Puppets - Pelican 2
  7. Using black thread, stitch lines into the front grey feather.
  8. Position the black back portion of the pelican’s mouth and position the fish on top of it.Ocean Finger Puppets - Pelican 1
  9. Position the white teeth beneath the fish and sew in place.
  10. Using black thread, sew a small upside-down v for the fish’s eye.
  11. Place the orange beak over the fish and stitch around the edge, using orange thread.
  12. Position the black inner eye over the white outer eye and stitch down using black thread (When creating eyes, I place the white portion, place the black over white, and stitch the black through the white. Not stitching the white separately makes the eyes pop a bit more.)
  13. Stitch a couple exclamation points into the blue background, over the pelican’s head.
  14. Stitch a few hairs into the top of the pelican’s head (I used black thread but if I made another, I would use white thread instead.)
  15. To the right of the fish, stitch a few teardrop shapes, using black thread.Ocean Finger Puppets - Pelican 3
  16. Align the blue background with the front piece and stitch together using a blanket stitch, leaving bottom open (I also go back and stitch just the front edge of the opening with a blanket stitch to reinforce it but that is totally optional.)Ocean Finger Puppets - Pelican 4

We got some great suggestions for more finger puppets. We are considering adding a forest animals set, a few more species of sharks, and some DINOSAURS!!!

If you would like to see us design any other creatures, let us know! Leave a comment here or stop by our Facebook page where you will also find more updates on our current projects.

Hope you’re having a great week!!
